Makhachkala discusses a proposal to restore ferry service with the port of Turkmenbashi
Dagestan is considering the proposal of the Turkmen side to restore ferry communication between the port of Turkmenbashi and the sea trade port of Makhachkala. Murad Khidirov, general director of the port of Makhachkala, said this in an interview with the newspaper Dagestanskaya Pravda. Assessing the importance of the port for Russia, the head of the port emphasized that the seaport of Makhachkala in the Caspian Sea is an important strategic transport hub in the transport system of the south of the country with the countries of Central Asia, Iran, the Caucasus and other countries of the region.
According to Khidirov, a lot of work has been done to improve the financial condition of the port, but much remains to be done to improve the efficiency and infrastructure of the port. According to him, there is a berth in the port of Makhachkala with railway access to the ferry. But rail ferries are now the property of Azerbaijan, which has a monopoly on ferry traffic in the Caspian Sea, and does not lease these ferries.
“We are negotiating with potential partners of the Caspian states. In particular, there are interesting proposals from Turkmen entrepreneurs. It was stated that Turkmenistan is interested in restoring ferry communication between Makhachkala and Turkmenbashi, ”Khidirov said. In addition, he stressed that the transportation of Caspian oil and the transportation of cargo formed in Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Iran through the port of Makhachkala, according to experts, are economically profitable and reduce the delivery time of goods along the North-South corridor.
